Chapter 10 – Gloria

God, what was she doing? Spilling just about her whole life story to a near-stranger… and to make matters worse, a dragon. Wasn’t it bad enough that she was carrying a dragon’s child? Wasn’t it bad enough that she’d already given birth to a half-dragon child? She could just imagine what her family would say to her, the scorn and disgust in their eyes. Go and join the dragons, then, they’d sneer. See if you can sprout a pair of wings.

But that was just the problem, wasn’t it? She’d felt so lonely, so desperate for any kind of kindness—especially over the last few weeks, since the pregnancy had taken hold. Hormones, maybe. She’d certainly known she was pregnant well before the positive test confirmed it. The change in her body was subtle, but familiar… and to her relief, she’d felt a lot of joy intermingled with the apprehension of realizing that the process was well and truly underway. It would be a while until her body reflected the changes outwardly, but she was well aware of the life that was growing inside her.

But whether it was the hormones, the isolation or a little bit of both, Gloria found herself walking with Oliver out of the restaurant and along the street. It wasn’t exactly a nice part of town to stroll through—back when she’d lived here, she’d always walked quickly, especially late at night, not wanting to draw any unwanted attention. As a panther she was better equipped than the average woman to take care of herself, of course… but the men who catcalled her and followed her for blocks hadn’t known that. With Oliver at her side, though, that was no kind of problem. It would be a foolhardy human who’d even think about tangling with a guy who looked like him. She glanced up at him, feeling an odd flutter in her chest that had been there since she’d seen him come through the door of the restaurant. There was something about him that made her feel safe. It had taken her a while to put her finger on that unfamiliar feeling.

And as they walked, he talked. Slowly, haltingly—she got the distinct feeling that words weren’t at all his strong suit—but he talked. Told her about his brother Noah, who’d left home many years ago, unable to tolerate the harsh treatment that the brothers were subjected to by their father—and everything he said sent ripples of recognition washing through her.

“He just wanted us to be strong,” Oliver said, his eyes fixed on the footpath in front of them as they walked aimlessly down the street. “It was his way of showing he loved us, I think—giving us the gift of strength. But it almost killed Noah.”

“Sounds familiar,” Gloria admitted, biting her lip. “The matriarch of our family… she’s the same. Only tough love from her. Survival, not comfort, that’s her mantra.”

“We need both,” Oliver said softly. “It took me a long time to realize that, but we need both.
